Staying safe with gas

Staying safe with gas

2 August 2016

While gas is instant, reliable and efficient, it needs to be used properly.

WorkSafe's Energy Safety team is responsible for regulating the safe use of gas and electricity in New Zealand. They want to help Kiwis use gas and LPG safely at home.

They also want to remind Kiwis to use a qualified gasfitter to install any gas appliance—it's not safe or legal to do it yourself.

If you smell gas indoors, don't muck around. If safe to do so, turn off all gas appliances and get a licensed gas worker to check the installation. If an appliance is poorly maintained or faulty, it can produce poisonous carbon monoxide.
